History Of Charity Baptist Church
In the spring of 1982, Jim Crews felt God directing his life to begin a new church work in the Tri-Cities area of northeast Tennessee. After much prayer and consideration, he purchased three and one-half acres of land in Blountville, Tennessee. After being ordained into the ministry on June 13, 1982, brother Crews purchased a single wide mobile home, set it up on the property and held the first service of Charity Baptist Church on August 15, 1982. Twelve people came for Sunday School that first day with two more coming in for the preaching service. The church was officially organized later that fall. On December 7, 1982, Haskel Malone preached a charge to the church and Charity Baptist received a charter from the State of Tennessee with seventeen charter members. In August of 1983, the church began construction of a new auditorium and held the first service in the new auditorium on August 4, 1984. Due to continued growth, the church began conducting two Sunday morning worship services in the fall of 1994. On March 15, 1992, Pastor Crews resigned as pastor of Charity Baptist, and in May of that same year Perry Cleek was called to pastor Charity Baptist Church and began his ministry as pastor on May 6. In late summer of 1994, construction began on a new Sunday School wing with plans also to double our existing parking space. The new construction added nine new Sunday School classrooms, a new modern-equipped nursery, a kitchen, and additional restrooms. The new addition also included an activity room that doubles as a fellowship hall and provides a meeting place for our Wednesday night A.W.A.N.A clubs. In the Spring of 2007, Charity Baptist Church began construction on a new sanctuary and in August of 2007, celebrated our 25th anniversary in the new building.
